Hope for millions of arthritis sufferers as scientists find 'cure' - thanks to COWS
Researchers have managed to grow new cartilage tissue from cows, which could help arthritis sufferers. Scientists are a step closer to a cure for arthritis after growing new cartilage tissue from cows.
When cartilage becomes damaged, it leads to the painful condition - leaving sufferers immobile and in pain. In extreme cases, nearly all cartilage in a joint can be worn away - causing a painful grinding together of bones. There is currently no cure for arthritis but now researchers at Pennsylvania State University in the US have successfully grown cartilage tissue in the lab from cow joints. They hope they could create a treatment cure for arthritis by growing human cartilage in a similar way, effectively churning out patches for worn joints.
Their research was published in journal Scientific Reports.
Because replacement metal knee joints wear out eventually, a better solution would be to replace damaged cartilage.
Cartilage is particularly susceptible to wear as it does not have any blood vessels, so it has difficulty repairing itself.
The experiments in the US involved engineering replacement cartilage in the lab.
Researchers successfully produced tissue similar to tissue normally present in humans.
They hope that in the future these results may help create cartilage for repairing knee joints ravaged by arthritis.
The US researchers grew cartilage cells in thin tubes three to five hundredths of an inch in diameter made from an algae extract.
Once removed from the tubes, the cartilage strands were used for 3D printing. Squeezed through a specially designed nozzle, the strands can be laid down in rows in any desired pattern.
After about half an hour, the “printed” cartilage patch stuck together well enough to be moved to a lab dish.
Eventually the strands fully attached and fused together.
Dr Ozbolat said: “We can manufacture the strands in any length we want.
"Because there is no scaffolding, the process of printing the cartilage is scalable, so the patches can be made bigger as well.
“We can mimic real articular cartilage by printing strands vertically and then horizontally to mimic the natural architecture.”
Previous attempts at growing cartilage have embedded cells in a “scaffold” of hydrogel, a jelly-like plastic material. But Dr Ozbolat said: "Hydrogels dont allow cells to grow as normal. The Hydrogels confines the cells and doesn't allow them to communicate as they do in native tissues".
Degradation of the hydrogel can also produce toxic compounds that hinder cell growth, he pointed out.
The next stage will be to apply the same successful process to human cartilage.
Each patient treated would probably have to supply their own source material to avoid tissue rejection.
The source could be existing cartilage or stem cells transformed into cartilage cells.
Meanwhile, it emerged that transplant patients could soon receive new organs printed using 3D technology.
Experts have discovered how to use the revolutionary printers to create living human tissue.
And they believe the breakthrough will give doctors the power to create new organs to implant into patients.
Scientists at Bristol University invented a type of “bio-ink” made from stem cells which are the building blocks of human DNA.

How to Remove Stains Like Mustard, Red Wine, and gum
Life can be messy. One moment you’re enjoying a hot dog with mustard when a splatter of the yellow stuff suddenly lands on your shirt. Or you're sipping a tasty Merlot when a party-crashing dog bumps into you, splashing the red wine all over your pants. Next thing you know, people are offering foolproof methods to remove the stain, but beware: Sometimes their "surefire" tips are wrong and your clothes end up in worse shape.
Pat Slaven, a textile expert at Consumer Reports for 21 years, knows what to do when stains happen.
“The best thing to do is to get as much of the mess off as soon as possible—scrape it off, blot it off—without rubbing or spreading,” says Slaven. “If you don’t know what to do next, liquid dish detergent mixed with water is a great choice.” Use a damp white cloth with a little detergent, and try blotting an inconspicuous spot first so that you don’t ruin the garment.
Read below how to remove tough mustard, red wine and chewing gum. Some of the advice involves weird but solid science.
Yellow MustardCurcumin not lends mustard it yellow color but also makes a mustard stain hard to remove from fabric. To deal with a mustard stain, scrape off the condiment without spreading. Mix 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent in 1 cup of warm water, work into fabric, rinse well, and hang the clothing item in the sun. (Curcumin is very sensitive to sunlight—nature’s bleaching agent.) This method works on most anything that can be left in the sun for a few hours, including rugs and upholstery.
Red WineForget that advice about using white wine or a clear sugary soda to remove red-wine stains. “It may work initially, but over time you wind up with a permanent brown stain,” says Slaven. Instead, wet and blot the fabric immediately. Hand-wash in 2 cups of warm water mixed with 2 teaspoons of liquid dish detergent. While the fabric is wet, liberally apply 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to the garment then lay it in the sun for several hours to bleach naturally.
Chewing GumYou can’t wash gum out, and freezing then scraping the garment can damage the fabric. Extra-strength Bengay is what you need. This analgesic rub contains methyl salicylate, which dissolves the gum base. Heat gum with a hair dryer, scrape off as much as possible with a plastic knife, work in a dab of Bengay, then use a zip-top bag to pick off the resulting goo that's chemically more attracted to the plastic than a paper towel.
Senate president Bukola Saraki in court on corruption charges
Abuja (AFP) - Senate president Bukola Saraki on Monday kicked off his corruption trial by denying he falsified parliamentary rules to get elected.
The influential Nigerian politician has been charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy and forgery and was in the dock alongside his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, at the high court in Abuja.
The clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, and his deputy, Benedict Efturi, are also facing the same charges.
According to the charge sheet, the defendants "with fraudulent intent forged" parliamentary documents and used them to get Saraki and Ekweremadu elected in June last year.
Conviction carries a maximum 14-year jail sentence.
Judge Yusuf Halilu granted all four men bail and adjourned the case until July 11.
Saraki, from Buhari's governing All Progressives Congress, became president of Nigeria's upper chamber of parliament unopposed after securing backing of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
But he was not the APC's first choice, which led some to claim the charges against him are politically motivated.
Saraki is also facing charges of failing to disclose assets in a separate case relating to his time as a state governor from 2003 to 2011. He has denied wrong-doing.

WOW! I Wish Our Governor's Wives Could All Be Like Her.’ Maine Governor’s Wife Takes Up Waitressing Job
Instead of spending her husband's money on expensive clothes shoes and bags, the wife of Maine Governor Paul LePage chose to wait tables at a local restaurant. Guess what Her goal is: to buy a new SUV.
Ann LePage is working part-time as a waitress at McSeagull's Restaurant in Boothbay Harbor three days a week at lunchtime to save enough money to purchase a new Toyota Rav4, CNN reports. Gov. Paul LePage said she also took the job to “supplement” his $70,000 salary, the lowest of any U.S. governor, according to the Associated Press.
“Because of who I am and who I’m married to, I want to work extra hard just so I can show them I can do the job,” Ann LePage told the AP, adding that being a waitress is something she’s “always, always wanted to do.”
Maine’s First Lady for the last five years has already proven her worth at the restaurant, Jackie Barnicoat, McSeagull’s general manager, told CNN. “It’s not just all fun and games,” Barnicoat said. “There’s a lot of grueling side work that comes with it and she doesn’t stop. I wish they could all be like her.” I'm in love with this woman.
Texas Mother with Mental Illness History Shot Daughters before being put down by Police
After receiving 911 reports of shots being fired over an alleged family dispute, police arrived at the Sheats’ home shortly after 5 p.m. to find Taylor Sheats, 22, and Madison Sheats, 17, lying on the street. The mother was shot dead after she refused to drop her weapon. One daughter died at the scene, and the other after arriving at the hospital.
The Texas mother who was killed by police after fatally shooting her two daughters on Friday reportedly had a history of mental illness and actively supported gun rights on Facebook.
While Sheats’ motive is still under investigation, People reports that her Facebook posts indicate that she was an active gun-rights supporter. In January, People says, Sheats uploaded a meme ridiculing Obama’s views on gun control. In March, she reportedly posted an anti-gun-control video with the message, “It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away, but that’s exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semiautomatic handguns.”
The Fort Bend County Sheriff spokeswoman Caitilin Espinosa told People that Christy Sheats’ “mental crisis” had brought the police to her home “for previous altercations.” Further details were not provided.
“We’re still trying to put the pieces together,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls told the Houston Chronicles.
Taylor Swift fires shots at Kim Kardashian calls her a liar'
Taylor Swift is firing back at Kim Kardashian. The Grammy-winner has taken issue with Kardashian's bombshell interview in the July issue of "GQ," where she claims that Swift knew all along that Kanye West would be calling her "that b**ch" in his song "Famous."
Kardashian told the magazine that Swift "approved" the song and was pretending to be offended when it came out in February. "She totally approved that," Kardashian said in the article. "She totally knew that that was coming out. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn't."
Swift's camp released a lengthy statement hitting back at the reality star and her marriage to West.
"Taylor does not hold anything against Kim Kardashian, as she recognizes the pressure Kim must be under and that she is only repeating what she has been told by Kanye West," The statement reads. "However, that does not change the fact that much of what Kim is saying is incorrect. Kanye West and Taylor only spoke once on the phone while she was on vacation with her family in January of 2016 and they have never spoken since. Taylor has never denied that conversation took place."
The statement goes on to say, "It was on that phone call that Kanye West also asked her to release the song on her Twitter account, which she declined to do. Kanye West never told Taylor he was going to use the term 'that b**ch' in referencing her. A song cannot be approved if it was never heard. Kanye West never played the song for Taylor Swift. Taylor heard it for the first time when everyone else did and was humiliated. Kim Kardashian's claim that Taylor and her team were aware [of the lyrics] is not true, and Taylor cannot understand why Kanye West, and now Kim Kardashian, will not just leave her alone."
Swift has always denied knowing anything ahead of time about West's song, which is off his "Life of Pablo" album and released an initial statement when the song was released. Shortly after, West hosted "SNL" and was recorded backstage calling Swift a "fake a**."
SHOCKING! Iceland sends England packing out of Euro 2016 finals
Euro 2016: Iceland shocks England in historic upset to reach quarterfinals
Iceland pulled off one of the most astonishing results in the history of European football on Monday, knocking England out of the Euro 2016 finals.
Playing at its first major international tournament, Iceland came from behind to win 2-1 in Nice and set up a quarterfinal tie against host nation France.
This victory, without doubt is the most important in the country's history, not only inflicted humiliation on England but also underlined Iceland's reputation as a growing force in world football.
For a country of 330,000, qualifying for the tournament was an achievement --- but the success of this team has surpassed the nation's wildest dreams.
England, home of the world's richest league, was woeful. In a week where Great Britain voted to leave the European Union, England was sent packing from Euro 2016 in embarrassing fashion.

Honda 2FM prototypes exported to Japan
Honda India has exported prototype test vehicles of the 2FM from India. This is expected to be the Jazz-based crossover and will make its debut in markets like India and Brazil next year. Over the last few months Honda had been importing components for the same from various locations. The export of completed prototypes indicates that the cars are destined for a final sign off from Tokyo before hitting the production lines.
The cars that have been exported are powered by the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine and are in the S, V and VX trim levels. However, we believe that Honda will also offer the car with the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol engine.
Speculative renderings and pictures of the test cars indicate that Honda will go with the standard formula of hatchback-based crossovers. This includes adding a cladding to the exterior of the vehicle, fitting it with taller wheels and probably a different rear end to differentiate it from the standard Jazz. This vehicle will rival the likes of the Hyundai i20 Active, Fiat Avventura and the Volkswagen Cross Polo.

ISIS targeting Nigerian children through mobile app
THE Federal Government, on Thursday, alerted citizens to a newly-launched mobile application which the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) developed for propagation of Jihad in children.
It said the app teaches children Arabic alphabets with the aid of guns, military tanks and cannons.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the mobile application is tagged ‘Huroof’ (Arabic alphabets or letters.)
According to him, the application utilises colourful illustrations that attract and engage the attention of young children.
The minister urged members of the public in general and parents in particular to be vigilant and prevent their children and wards from being indoctrinated?
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army, on Thursday, said Boko Haram terrorists now evade drones and aircraft surveillance by hiding in makeshift camps covered with shrubs.
Colonel Sani Usman, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, revealed this new tactic in a statement in Maiduguri.
Usman said in the statement that the discovery was made during a clearance operation in the North Eastern area of Kumshe in Borno.
“Troops of 7 Division Strike Group Team B, attached to 21 Brigade have braved harsh climatic conditions to clear seven villages of Boko Haram terrorists’ presence in the North East of Kumshe village.
“The villages are Mulfuta, Baibawa, Jenere, Bembem, Maksamari, Bula Kafie and Bula Bodi.
“The troops discovered that the Boko Haram terrorists have evolved new tactics of evading surveillance by drones and aircraft. They now hide in makeshift camps covered with shrubs,” said the statement.
It added that the troops recovered some motorcycles, two Dane guns, large quantity of foodstuffs stored in a well constructed storage facility and solar panels.
It stated that the troops proceeded to Bembem, “where the suspected Boko Haram terrorists also laid an ambush for them.
“It was, however, cleared successfully although a soldier sustained gunshot wound during the clearance. He has been evacuated and receiving treatment.
“The team discovered and rescued some hostages held by the Boko Haram terrorists in the area.’’
CBN hopeful naira will stabilise at 250 naira per dollar
Nigeria’s central bank is “reasonably optimistic” the naira will settle at around 250 to the U.S. dollar after an initial period of weakness following a flotation on Monday, the bank’s governor has said in a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Nigeria’s central bank said on Wednesday it would begin market-driven foreign currency trading next week, abandoning the peg of 197 naira per dollar that it has supported for 16 months.
Foreign investors and economists have called for months for a devaluation as chronic foreign currency shortages choked economic growth and deterred investment.
The naira is expected to fall sharply when interbank trading begins on Monday, but the central bank said it did not have a target for the currency and the price would be “purely” market-driven. The naira was trading on the black market at around 370 to the dollar on Thursday.
Giving the first indication of a target, Governor Godwin Emefiele said in a June 3 letter to Buhari -- seen by Reuters -- that the central bank hopes the naira will eventually trade at around 250 per dollar, a level the president has “approved”.
“I must assure Your Excellency that we are indeed reasonably optimistic that at some point the rate will settle around 250 naira,” Emefiele says in the letter.
The letter, which briefs Buhari on the foreign exchange plan announced on Wednesday, says it could take three to four weeks to clear a $4 billion backlog of foreign exchange demand.
Buhari has for months said that he does not want the naira to be devalued, but backed a more flexible exchange rate policy when the central bank outlined its plans in May, without elaborating.
The presidency has not commented on the new regime, with Buhari’s spokesman declining to comment when Reuters called on Wednesday.
The central bank could not be immediately reached for comment.
Africa’s biggest economy, which contracted by 0.4 percent in the first quarter, faces its worst crisis in decades after the decline in oil prices since 2014 and last year’s introduction of a currency peg, which prompted a large-scale capital flight.
With a likely sharp fall for the naira, Nigerian products will become relatively cheap and imports more expensive, which should stimulate the domestic economy but also lift inflation.
Buhari has previously raised concerns about the inflationary impact that a weaker currency will have on Nigeria’s poor.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest crude exporter, has resisted devaluing its currency for more than a year despite other major oil producers, including Russia, Kazakhstan and Angola, allowing currencies to fall after crude prices collapsed.
The Naira on Thursday dropped against the United States dollar as it sold for N370 to a dollar on the parallel market.
This is even as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) did not do any new dollar-naira trades on the interbank market on Thursday.
Reuters quoted a CBN official as revealing that the apex bank did $13.6 million of carryover trades at about the pegged rate of N197.5 to a dollar.
CBN, on Wednesday, said it would begin open-market foreign currency trading next week, abandoning its 16-month-old peg against the dollar.
Dealers said they expected no interbank currency market activity until the new trading regime starts on Monday.
Meanwhile currency dealers at the unofficial market confirmed that the new policy has had an adverse effect on the Nigerian currency already as new rates have emerged.
“With the new policy now, there are going to be fluctuations but we are sure that the CBN has done what it considers the best for the country,” a source informed.
In the same vein, Nigerian Interbank Treasury Bills True Yields (NITTY) increased across the maturities on low level of activity as yields on one month, three months, six months and 12 months rose to 2.73 per cent, 7.55per cent, 9.82per cent and 12.53 per cent respectively.
Also, the Nigerian Interbank Offered Rates (NIBOR) increased across most of the tenor buckets on liquidity strain – NIBOR for overnight and one month, three months and six months rose to 8.38 per cent, 12.05 per cent and 13.66 per cent respectively.
Court denies former special assistant to Goodluck Jonathan bail over alledged N5.1bn fraud
A Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was on Thursday, denied bail by Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
Warpamo Owei Emmanuel Dudafa and one Iwejuo Joseph Nna were both arraigned before the court on a 23-count charge bordering on fraud and stealing on Tuesday.
They are both facing N5.1 billion fraud charges brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The two accused persons had pleaded not guilty to all the charges and upon their pleas, the prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, urged the court to remand them in prison custody.
At Thursday’s proceedings, the accused persons’ counsels, Gboyega Oyewole and Sunday Abumere, imformed the court that their clients’ bail applications have been filed and had been served on the prosecution.
They urged the court to admit their clients bail on liberal terms.
However, the EFCC prosecutor, Oyedepo, admitted receiving the bail applications, but informed the court that he was not opposing the bail applications, but needed time to respond.
Upon the submissions of both parties, Justice Idris ordered that the two accused persons be remanded in prisons custody till June 20, when the court would decide on their bail applications.
In the charge sheet signed by Oyedepo, the EFCC alleged that Dudafa and Nna, who also claimed to be Taiwo Ebenezer and Olugbenga Isaiah, had, between June 11, 2013 and June, 2015, used different companies to fraudulently steal and launder money.
Some of the companies allegedly used in committing the alleged offences are Seagate Property Development & Investment Limited; Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited; Iwejuo Joseph Nna and Pluto LUTO Property and Investment Company Limited; Iwejuo Joseph Nna and Rotate Interlink Services Limited.
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari's trip to London extended
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has extended his ongoing vacation to enable him have the weekend off.
This was confirmed by acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday, in a short interview with State House corespondents before the commencement of National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Osinbajo revealed that, the president who was due to return to Abuja on Wednesday following his initial 10-day vacation would now come on Sunday as he would now be taking the weekend off.
But the Vice President stressed that Buhari was in good health.
He said: "The President will be back on Sunday. I spoke with him yesterday evening and I think it is just the best that he takes the weekend off. He will certainly be back on Sunday.
"I think the most straightforward thing is when he will be back. He will be back on Sunday. There is no point rushing back on Friday or something like that.
"He will just take the weekend off and be back on Sunday.
"He is in perfect health and ready to resume work on Monday morning.
"Mr. President is in good condition, he is fine, he is very well. He should take a day or two off in London and rest a bit and come back hale and hearty on Sunday and be ready for work on Monday.
"So we expect him back on Sunday."
Recall that the president left Abuja on Monday, June 6, 2016, for a 10-day vacation in London, during which he will seek medical attention for his ailing ear.
The president had an infection in his left ear, believed to be Meniere Disease, which has caused him to drastically reduced his official engagements recently.
The condition is said to cause pains and hearing impairment.
The president had abruptly cancelled planned trips to Edo, Lagos and Rivers states recently with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo drafted to represent him.
The vice president, it would be recalled, represented him for a state visit to Lagos, just as he did for the flag-off of the clean-up exercise of Ogoniland.
According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Sunday June 5, 2016, the president would see an Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist before resting in London.
The statement said: "President Muhammadu Buhari will take 10 days off and travel to London on Monday June 6th to rest.
"During the holiday, he will see an E.N.T. specialist for a persistent ear infection. The President was examined by his Personal Physician and an E.N.T Specialist in Abuja and was treated. Both Nigerian doctors recommended further evaluation purely as a precaution."
Against reports of ill health, Adesina had previously maintained the president was "fit as a fiddle."
